The second to last day of the 2. FIR European Racketlon Championships presented by Babolat ended with a complete success for the hosts. Austria’s Elite team with Lukas Windischberger, Christine Seehofer, Michi Dickert/Hans Sherpa and Stephan Schmutzer took Gold in the highest division of the national team competitions, the PUR PERSONALDIENSTLEISTUNG Championship Division. U21 vice European Champion Schöpf had to take a break because of shoulder  issues. “Of course I would have preferred to play. But like this, there is no point. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for my team,” said the player from Vorarlberg ahead of the game. In the final game, the RFA team beat its long-time rival Denmark, which was entering with Kasper Jønsson, Jannie Erbs Eriksen, Kresten Hougaard/Morten Jaksland and Jesper Hougaard.

After the first two disciplines Table Tennis and Badminton, Austria had been 20 points ahead already. “Now we won’t let this slip through our fingers”, RFA president Weigl had said during the break. And the number nine of Elite Singles turned out to be right. After Squash, Austria was already 30 points ahead. In Tennis, 16 points were sufficient for the RFA team. Ten were gained by Lukas Windischberger, six by Christine Seehofer – Gold! Bronze went to Great Britain, who won against Sweden.

Post-Game Voices

Team Captain Tom Wagner: “We were the ones who had more energy left at the end of a week of tournament. We had rotated players and could combine forces for the last match. I am proud of my team.”

Windischberger: “I guess I can’t always be losing! A conciliatory end of the European Championships for me.”

Christine Seehofer: “Awesome!”

It is the first European Champion title for an Austrian Elite team, which after the World Champion titles of 2010 and 2012 were able to win a big tournament again. Both in the EC finals 2015 and the WC finals 2016, they had lost to Denmark.

Finland was relegated from the highest (Champions) Division. In the WTTV Division 1, Belgium ascended. None of the teams of WSRV Division 2 could ascend to Division 1.
